Introduction to SIS

The University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) is one of China’s top universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. It is listed under Project 211 and the Double First-Class Project of China. Founded in 1951, its English Subject is one of the most important and influential ones under the School of International Studies (SIS).

There are 7 departments in SIS, including Department of Business English, Department of Translation and Interpreting, Department of English Literature, Department of Linguistics, Department of Basic English and Department of English for Special Purposes. There is currently a doctoral program, a master's academic degree program and a postdoctoral research center under the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature. There are three second-level master’s degrees in English Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpretation; three majors in undergraduate studies, including Business English, Translation, and English.

SIS boasts a strong faculty. World-renowned experts Zhang Peiji and Zhang Bingzi used to work here. In recent years, the school has also introduced a group of outstanding young scholars. It is now staffed by about 107 faculty members. Among the faculty, there are 17 professors and 56 associate professors, 9 of whom are doctoral supervisors. Over 78 teachers hold Ph.D. degrees and more than 90% have studied or undergone advanced training abroad. It also has over 20 well-known domestic and foreign scholars as chair professors.

From 2012 to 2021, the development of English discipline has been accelerating with remarkable achievements. SIS has won 23 projects of the National Social Science Fund of China, 26 projects of Humanities and Social Science from the Ministry of Education, and 17 projects of Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science. The school won recognition for 3 National Quality Courses, and published 47 monographs on linguistics, literature, translation, and cross-cultural studies, as well as 121 textbooks, translations, and dictionaries. In addition, 435 papers have been published in core journals such as A&HCI, SSCI, EI, and CSSCI.

For the past 70 years, SIS has been dedicated to cultivating talents with global awareness and diversified skills. Graduates have been widely recognized with solid English language skills and high comprehensive quality, with an employment rate exceeding 98% in recent years. Our alumni and alumna are found in important positions in national institutions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, major media outlets such as Xinhua News Agency, higher education institutions, international organizations, large state-owned, multinational or private enterprises both at home and abroad. Most of our students passed the English proficiency tests of TEM-4 and TEM-8, excelling in various national competitions such as English speaking, translation and interpretation, business negotiation, business knowledge and so on.

SIS has continuously strengthened its outlooks in globalization and vigorously promoted overseas joint training programs, establishing cooperative relationships with 11 well-known overseas universities, including Warwick University and Leeds University in the UK, Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the USA, University College Dublin in Ireland, Monash University in Australia, and the Interpretation Directorate-General of the European Commission. The school has also launched 12 international cooperation projects, such as the “1+1” Program of Master of Translation and Interpretation, “1+1” Program of Master of Intercultural Studies, Short-term Undergraduate Exchanging Program, and Short-term Summer/Winter Exchanging Program. From 2001 to 2019, the school cooperated with the Interpretation Directorate-General of the European Commission to establish the China-EU Advanced Interpreter Training Center, to train high-end international conference interpreters. Based on their solid cooperation, the two parties are currently exploring more comprehensive and in-depth ways of partnership.
