A Message from the Dean
Dear Friends,
The School of International Studies (SIS) at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) is a foundational school of the university, established in 1951. From its early days training much-needed interdisciplinary talents in foreign trade and English for the nascent People's Republic of China, to pioneering the "Listening and Speaking First, Reading and Writing Following" teaching methodology in the 1960s; from its nationally renowned foreign trade English radio and television programs in the early years of reform and opening-up, to being the first institution in China to gain approval from the Ministry of Education to offer an undergraduate program in Business English in 2007 – for seven decades, SIS has consistently forged ahead with determination and leadership.
Time flows relentlessly, marked by dedication and achievement. Through the pioneering efforts of generations, SIS has developed a comprehensive and systematic approach, along with a successful model, for cultivating elite talents with international perspectives and interdisciplinary skills. We have established a complete talent development system encompassing undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs. The school boasts a strong faculty of 107 full-time teachers, 68% of whom hold senior professional titles and 73% possess doctoral degrees. Our faculty includes renowned discipline leaders within China, a National-Level Teaching Team for Business English, and Beijing Municipal-Level Excellent Teaching Teams. Our national and municipal-level elite courses are highly prestigious, and we have achieved remarkable accomplishments in English Language and Literature, Translation, and Cross-Cultural Studies. SIS maintains cooperative relationships with the Directorate-General for Interpretation (SCIC) of the European Commission and many prestigious universities in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia. Presently, nearly 100 international students from around the world are pursuing undergraduate or master's degrees in English at our School.
Over seventy years of tremendous change, SIS has nurtured countless graduates who have spread across the globe. Our alumni hold key positions in international organizations, Chinese diplomatic missions abroad, ministries such as the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as major enterprises both in China and internationally. Among them are government ministers, military generals, industry elites, and business leaders. Distinguished alumni include Mr. Lin Jianhai, Secretary-General of the International Monetary Fund; Mr. Tang Weihua, Senior Interpreter at the United Nations; Mr. Lin Chaolun, Chief Chinese Interpreter for the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office; and Mr. Zhou Wenzhong, current Secretary-General of the Boao Forum for Asia and former Chinese Ambassador to the USA/Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
As China further opens its education sector to the world and advances the national "Double First-Class" initiative (building world-class universities and disciplines), all members of the SIS community remain true to our original aspirations and mission, striving with pioneering spirit to write new splendid chapters in the development of China's higher education in the new era.
Thank you for your interest in and support of the School of International Studies! We warmly welcome you to join us! Let us join hands and create a brilliant future together!
