Founded in 1952, the Department of Translation and Interpreting is one of the first disciplines established at the university and one of the second batch of translation majors approved by the state. The Department adheres to the principle of high standard and international teaching and is famous for its cultivation of multi-disciplinary translation talents in business (international economics and trade). The goal of the Department is to cultivate practical talents with solid language skills and strong translation and interpreting abilities, competent for jobs in government departments, foreign affair agencies in China, Chinese and international enterprises and various social organizations. The programs of the Department run on three levels, including undergraduate, master (MA in English translation and interpretation and MTI) and PhD, forming a complete model of training translation talents with business characteristics from undergraduate to postgraduate.
The Department now has a large faculty of experts and researchers, with 19 full-time teachers, including 2 professors, 12 associate professors and 5 lecturers, among whom 2 are doctoral supervisors and 17 master supervisors. A total of 13 teachers hold PhD, 2 are studying for their doctoral degrees. The faculty has reasonable age and academic structure, and the teaching team of translation (economic and trade translation) and interpretation enjoys a high reputation nationwide.
The Department consists of the teaching and research sections in both translation and interpretation. The Translation Teaching and Research Section has 9 full-time teachers who are responsible for the general translation courses for undergraduate and graduate students, including Business English-Chinese Translation, Business Chinese-English Translation, Translation Theory, Literary Translation, Scientific Translation, Legal Translation, Computer-Aided Translation, Translation and Entrepreneurial Management, etc. The Translation Teaching and Research Section boasts a large number of well-known professors and scholars in the field of translation, with one member of the Expert Committee of the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI). With rich translation experiences, the teachers have translated important documents, such as the WTO entry negotiations in international organizations and government agencies.
The Interpretation Teaching and Research Section has ten full-time teachers who are responsible for the general interpretation courses for undergraduate and graduate students, including interpreting, Consecutive Interpretation, Simultaneous interpreting, Sight Translation, English Speech, Liaison Interpreting for Business Purposes, Consecutive Interpreting for Business Purposes, and Overview of Interpretation Theory. There are two members of the Expert Committee of the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI). The faculty have all received trainings on conference interpreting from the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission and obtained training certificates. Many of them have served as interpreters for international conferences and accumulated rich experiences, providing interpretation services for international organizations, including the United Nations Headquarters, New York, the United Nations European Headquarters in Geneva, the International Labor Organization and the European Union.
The Department of Translation and Interpreting boasts a high-quality scientific research team. In recent years, 2 National Social Science Fund projects and nearly 20 provincial and ministry level projects have been approved. The researchers of the department have published more than 50 CSSCI papers and more than 20 monographs, translated works and textbooks, which have produced a great impact on translation teaching and research. The Department also pays attention to the training of professional and compound faculty, and introduces outstanding doctors with compound backgrounds in economics, law and engineering.
The high-level faculty provides a solid foundation for the cultivation of talents and the construction of the discipline. In recent years, the proportions of students who choose further study abroad, further study in China or employment remain the highest compared with other universities of its kind in China. Among the 40 graduates in 2018, 52.5% of them went abroad for further study, 22.5% continued their study in China and 25% chose employment or entrepreneurship.
Hosted by the Department of Translation and Interpreting, the Sino-EU Interpreter Training Center (SITC) aims to train master students in the field of international conference interpreting. SITC is the first high-level international conference interpreting training program in China. Established in 2001, SITC is also the first Sino-EUSCIC training program for interpreters in China. The program adheres to the principle of “stringent admission and graduation” and sticks to “small-class and high-quality” teaching. So far, it has trained nearly 100 high-quality conference interpreters and remains reputable and influential nationwide.
